Substance over style

Given that I am now officially a grad student, I have to purchase a new laptop in the near future. I don't know much about computers other than the basics (hard drive size, operating systems, RAM, etc) so I go mainly based on recommendations and looks (how female of me, right?). Perhaps I should rephrase that and say I go by how visually appealing a laptop is.

I was browsing laptops today and I came across one that caught my attention because...

...it was PINK! Yay!

Of course, I'd never buy this. I can't exactly show up to grad school and sit amongst other working professionals with a pink laptop and be taken seriously. I'd feel out of place. It reminds of me the scene in Legally Blonde where Elle Woods, the main character, shows up to her first day at Harvard Law and then proceeds to take notes in class on a pink heart-shaped note pad and matching fuzzy pink pen. Perhaps just a pink pen will do for grad school instead of a pink laptop. ;)

Does anyone have any good laptop recommendations?

My only "must haves" are that it be relatively light (I don't want to lug a huge weight across campus), have a decent battery life, and be around 14 to 15 inches in size. Also, I'm looking for a non-mac laptop (sorry Apple lovers). Thanks everyone! :)

  5. Well, everything did work out for Elle, so maybe the pink laptop isn't such a bad choice! (kidding!) I have no recs. Mine's a Toshiba and thats ALL I know about it.

  6. OMG-I'm totally crazy for anything pink! In that way I'm a complete sucker for marketing. I'll essentially by anything pink! In fact I went with the BlackBerry Pearl over the BlackBerry curve because Alltel didn't offer the curve in pink! I know, I probably need professional help! :)

That said, I'm also a sucker for techno anything and I did gobs of research before I actually chose my phone. Still if there are two equally good products, and one's offered in pink, there's no question which one I'll chose!
